When BG staff realized there were many non-Catholic families in the region sending their children to private schools out of the area, it was established that both a need and a market existed for a higher-level curriculum, to attract students to BG. Katrina Brown, a BG alum and educator for more than 30 years (with a specialty in teaching high-level students), was called upon to help administrators create a 7th- and 8th-grade program that would not only attract new students, but also challenge current high-level students at BG.

In its third year, the BG Pre-AP 7th- and 8th-grade programs have proved hugely successful. Enrollment in the program has tripled, with 10 students the first year, 22 the second year and now a projected 33 students. Although the number of students is growing, Brown and her team don’t expect the students’ experiences to suffer. In fact, Brown interviews students one-on-one to assess their needs, and a Pre-AP counselor is on staff to monitor mental and scholastic progress. It’s all to ensure each individual receives an “in-depth, critical thinking-based education.”

According to Brown, “the kids love it,” particularly the challenge, as students who would otherwise purposefully slow their learning experience are now pushing themselves and properly mastering time management.

Now, area parents who would have otherwise chosen another school, can pick BG for their advanced scholastic needs. Overall, the program is just one part of the expansive BG academic experience, preparing students for learning later in life, and best equipping them to reach their full potential after high school.
