At Bishop Guilfoyle, athletic programs aren’t just about what happens on the field. For BG students, physical education—including athletic teams—is an opportunity to grow and develop mentally, physically, and spiritually. In fact, according to the New York Times, studies have shown that high school students who participate in sports develop strong leadership skills and tend to have more self-confidence. Some studies even suggest that former high school athletes are more likely to volunteer their time and make donations as adults. Besides this, participating in sports helps young people form fitness and lifestyle habits that will keep them healthy for a lifetime.

BG teachers and coaches understand how athletic experiences can change the lives of young people. Athletic director Mike Cacciotti notes, “We have 85%-90% of our students participating in athletics. It’s an opportunity for them to learn the importance of time management, collaborating with teachers and coaches on how to balance their academics with athletics.”

That’s why BG has worked hard to implement a new physical education curriculum that helps students make long term commitments to health and wellness. This curriculum includes the introduction of a new app, Team Builder, which promotes a healthy life style for all students. When asked about his goals for the rest of the school year, Cacciotti explained, “We want our student athletes to continue to develop as great people and for our sports programs to remain competitive, while positively representing our school and community… We have a lot of student athletes that will help make our spring season competitive.  We are looking forward to our teams competing at high levels.”

Fortunately, students now have a new tool to help them achieve this goal: a beautiful, new athletic weight room. BG was able to upgrade the weight room thanks to a generous gift from Anthony and Nora Misitano. The dedication and support of community members like the Misitanos is BG’s greatest blessing.
