For Tommy Williams, coaching baseball at Bishop Guilfoyle is another chapter in a lifetime of local sports. After playing baseball and basketball as a student, he went on to coach all different age levels and sports for the past 19 years. “You name a sport for kids under 15, and I've coached it,” he says.
This is his first year coaching high school students, and he's looking forward to the challenge of building a strong baseball team at BG. “We've got 22 kids right now,” he says. “And my goal is to have as many kids involved as possible.”
His favorite part as he gets his team off the ground and ready for this upcoming season? Without a doubt, it's the parents. “I've coached so many sports at so many different age levels,” he says, “And I've never seen parent support like this. At my first informational meeting, 80 people showed up. I anticipated only half that many. I was blown away. The parent support at BG is amazing. It just shows you what kind of families you have here at BG.”
For the next year or two, Williams plans on working with the athletes to become better players and better teammates. He wants them to come together – really come together – as a new team. “It even takes pro teams a little while to come together and get a feel for everyone, and I want to get everyone on board with the team I want to run, and have them hang out with each other,” he says.
Williams and his wife Melinda are lifelong residents of Altoona, along with children Jared, Braylon and Ella. He enjoys playing basketball and loves coaching. After the season ends, you'll find him on local ball fields, coaching summer teams.
Welcome to BG, Coach Williams!
